You may have noticed something odd lately when searching for something within a place e.g. Nottingham Accountants. Before you would get a map at the top of your results, accompanied by 7 or 8 results, followed by your organic results. What you now get is something different.

Google have realised that the organic and map results had started to compete against each other, dividing web designers into deciding whether to optimise for maps or not. So now what they have done is remove the map results, order the results organically, and feature these organic results on a map.

What this means is that businesses will be rewarded for their SEO efforts and ranked accordingly. No longer will businesses be able to jump to the top of the results simply for having a central post code.

No, not the title of a new horror film, but something that could become reality over the next 6 months.

News headlines were speculating about a new venture yesterday due to a secret meeting at Adobe’s offices between the head honchos of Microsoft (Steve Ballmer) and Adobe (Shantanu Narayen). The New York Times reported:

The meeting, which lasted more than an hour, covered a number of topics, but one of the main thrusts of the discussion was Apple and its control of the mobile phone market and how the two companies could team up in the battle against Apple. A possible acquisition of Adobe by Microsoft were among the options.

The impact of the news drove Adobe’s stock price up 11.5% yesterday, adding about £1 billion to their market cap.

At Ash Tree Creative we worship Adobe and their amazing fleet of software tools that enable us to bring our imagination to your screens. So the thought of Microsoft getting their hands on such perfection in our opinion can only result in one thing, disaster. Adobe software works best on Apple’s OS, there is no question. So would Microsoft consider throwing a spanner in the works?
